If you fancy doing something a little different for your honeymoon, here is our list of underrated and often overlooked top honeymoon destinations specially selected to suit a wide range of tastes:
Tuscany Villa – for peace, seclusion and plenty of culture
Book a secluded villa in Tuscany a region in central Italy for your honeymoon and relax with your loved one in utopia-esque Renaissance country. The landscape is filled with olive groves, vineyards and rolling valleys and the scenery has inspired many famous artists including Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. It has remained virtually unchanged for centuries and certainly lives up to it’s hype. Head into one of the sleepy hill-top towns nestled in the countryside and indulge in typical Tuscan cuisine of truffles, roasted meats and sheep’s milk cheeses of course washed down with a glass of the region’s world-famous wine. If you tire of indulging in the sweet art of doing not very much at all, then hire a boat and island hop along the region’s coast or visit Florence, Pisa or one of the perfectly-preserved medieval towns.
Toyko Four Seasons – for adrenaline seekers and Asian culture lovers
Often overlooked as a honeymoon destination, the giant metropolis Tokyo would make a great alternative honeymoon for adrenaline junkies. The city is famous for it’s love of cutting-edge modernity and quirky trends but it also offers an alternative side – Tokyo is still filled with ancient traditions. Neighbourhood festivals are held regularly and shrines and temples can still be found on many streets. If you’re looking for a romantic day trip out, then head for the Temple of Asakusa or the beautiful gardens of the Imperial Palace. The famous Four Seasons Hotel is popular with honeymooners because it offers luxurious interiors, Zen-inspired spa treatments and impeccable Asian hospitality.
Borneo Rainforest – best for adventurous wildlife fans
Honeymooning in the Borneo Rainforest would suit adventurous eco-conscious couples with a fondness for wildlife. If you book a trip here you would benefit from pristine white sandy beaches, ancient forests, breathtaking mountain scenery and of course the world-famous Sepilok Sanctuary. This is where you can see the most lovable of all monkeys, the orangutans. Depending on your choice of holiday you could include a trip to the beautiful Mount Kinabalu or the Batang Ai Reservoir where the Iban Headhunter tribe live. In the afternoon why not try a tree-top high canopy walk or visiting endangered turtles and Proboscis monkeys in Kinabatangan River sanctuary. After a long but memorable day, retire in comfort to your eco-friendly luxury beach villa or rustic jungle lodge.
Scottish castle and whale watching – for outdoor and history lovers
There’s probably something very appealing about living like a 12th century King or Queen in a remote part of Scotland. If you chose to spend your honeymoon in a Scottish castle you could combine tranquil seclusion and grand, luxurious accommodation surrounded by wild rugged landscapes. Dine on a six course meal in the grand hall, sip whiskey by the fireplace or even take up croquet for the duration of your stay. Take a romantic scenic drive from Fort William to Mallaig, visit to the iconic Eilean Donan Castle or go whale watching on the Isle of Mull (Isle of Mull is part of the Hebrides a group of islands off the west coast of Scotland). Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the Hebrides is an area of outstanding natural beauty and has an abundance of wildlife. One Isle of Mull company (Sea Life Surveys) offers a 98% sighting success rate of seeing either minke whale, porpoises, basking sharks, dolphins, orca or grey seals.
Roadtrip through South America – for adventurous film fans
Fans of the Motorcycle Diaries might fancy retracing the historic route that was so beautifully captured on film. Travelling through South America is now a trendy and increasingly popular honeymoon destination for more adventurous types looking for the ultimate wild and romantic road trip. Okay so not everyone has eight months to spare like Che Guevara, but a route touring through four countries starting from Santiago in Chile and ending Buenos Aires in Argentina (via Bolivia and Brazil) would take you 25 days and might be an option. Learn to dance in Buenos Aires, join the carnival in Brazil or just enjoy the rugged and unparalleled beauty of Chile and Bolivia.
Cruise the Rhine – for relaxation and traditional sightseeing
Germany and the beautiful River Rhine would make a great traditional honeymoon, best suiting couples fond of history, culture and sightseeing. Thanks to a fairly new river cruise ship, the Premicon Queen, you can now cruise the Rhine in sophisticated five star luxury. The spacious ship offers modern interiors, spa facilities and attentive staff. Sail by fairytale historical castles, half-timbered villages and picturesque mountains and stop-off and picnic amid the ancient evergreens of the Black Forest – a perfect alternative honeymoon.

What a fantastic article. Very different from the usual beach honeymoons that bloggers suggest. Eilean Donan has to be one of the most beautiful and romantic castles I have ever visited so I would agree, this is a perfect place to visit on your honeymoon!
