Staying in Knightsbridge without breaking the bank

Secret hotels

We’ve got to be honest, it’s not often we get to stay in a Knightsbridge hotel. So when Secret hotels offered us a stay in one of the most exclusive parts of London known for its huge department stores, boutique shops and gorgeous eateries we didn’t have to think long about our answer. Secret Hotels is a company which allows travellers to find some great deals in some of the best hotels in London, so in early July we packed our bags for our very own Made in Chelsea style experience….

How does it work?

After we specified a date and a choice of location on the Secret Hotels website we were given a choice of quite a few hotels in London. In special secret squirrel style you don’t get know the names of the hotel at this stage just the rough location, star-rating (usually certified by HOTREC), and the facilities on offer.

As they only deal in hotels that are better than mid range we knew we wouldn’t be unwittingly selecting a dodgy back street B&B. If you book this way you get to save quite a bit on the original room price and we were impressed by how much we would have saved on the hotel we opted for in Knightsbridge (A total price of £149.15 instead of the standard rate of £265). The trade off is that the stay is often on a ‘room only’ basis and of course you don’t get to know the name of the hotel when you first book (you will get told immediately after your booking is confirmed so it does pay to check the location and hotel facility details thoroughly).

You might ask how they can offer these sort of discounts, but their answer to this is that even the finest hotels don’t want rooms left empty so they sell them off at typically 45% below the usual rate (on the condition that their name remains a secret). Although travellers are not treated any differently to other hotel guests and should expect to receive exactly the same level of hospitality and service.

Where did we stay

Our mysterious Knightsbridge hotel turned out to be the Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel, a very stylish and traditionally elegant boutique hotel in Belgravia. We couldn’t be happier, the hotel 87-room had beautifully decorated, elegant air-conditioned rooms (very handy for one of the hottest weekends of the year), complimentary WiFi and some of the friendliest and most professional hotel staffs we’ve encountered in a long time. The location was also superb, set in leafy and serene Belgravia Village yet only a few minutes away from Harrods and Harvey Nichols. We were also free to use the spa and health club facilities at their nearby sister hotel Jumeirah Carlton Tower (although we didn’t actually reach there, the shopping was way too much of a distraction!)

Although we were guests of Secret Hotels we can honestly say that the whole experience was even better than we expected, the standard of hotel was excellent, the discount offered was also very impressive and if you’re the sort of person that likes a little mystery in their life then Secrethotels.eu might just be the hotel booking agent for you.

We were guests of Secrethotels.eu but all our opinions are our own. Written by Becky, all photos by Gray.

Born in England, with a few family roots from Bavaria, and a heart in Scandinavia I've always been a bit of a restless soul. My first true adventure began as a six month voyage around South East Asia as a fresh faced backpacker and ever since I've lived a semi nomadic existence, clocking up over 40 countries on trips and living in Dublin, South East Asia and Australia. I'm a lover of US Road Trips, deserted beaches bathed in warm glow of a sunset, Cuban mojitos, easy-on-the-eye travel destinations far away from the tourist crowds and all things Scandinavian - from cloudberry liquors to Scandi Noirs. When not wandering the world, you'll find me walking my rescue dog in leafy South West London, strolling around the Brighton Laines on random day trips, hunting for photogenic landscapes or daydreaming about returning to my all time favourite places in the world; Havana, Copenhagen, Italy, Thailand and the frozen landscapes of a wintry Iceland.
