Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is a fascinating and beautiful city, bubbling with Latin spirit but deeply rooted in European history and architecture. Its streets, a mixture of wide, majestic boulevards and quaint cobbled alleyways, are a pleasure to stroll around. Indeed, you could easily spend a week in Buenos Aires just wandering the barrios (neighbourhoods). There is, however, so much to see and do in Argentina’s capital. Here are ten things (in no particular order) you ought to do to make the most of your trip to Buenos Aires.

1. Visit La Boca

Photo

You cannot leave Buenos Aires without taking a stroll down the colourful street of Caminito in La Boca. Here the houses are painted in different bright colours and artists sell their wares along the street. The area retains a strong European flavour, inspired by the Genovese immigrants who first settled there. The bohemian neighbourhood is also home to many tango clubs, Italian taverns and the Boca Juniors football club.

2. Experience Argentinian football fever

Photo

Argentinians are crazy about football and since more than half of Argentina’s top football teams are based in Buenos Aires, the passion here is tangible and intense. The country’s most successful teams are the Boca Juniors and River Plate and if you are lucky enough to be in town when they play you won’t regret buying a ticket. The Boca museum (located in their stadium, La Bombonera) is also worth a visit and here you can read about the clubs history, watch a video of Maradona’s best bits and touch some replica trophies, including the Copa Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the Champions League.

3. Fill up on Dulche de Leche

Photo

Some things taste so good you know they must be bad for you. Dulche de Leche is one of them and in Buenos Aires the stuff is everywhere. It tastes a lot like caramelised condensed milk, but much tastier. It’s sweet, sticky and amazing. Try it as a breakfast spread in the spirit of marmalade or strawberry jam.

4. See some tango

Photo

Nothing encapsulates the sexy, sultry spirit of Latin America quite like tango. Argentinians and Uruguayans could argue for weeks about who invented the dance, but what is certain is that it emerged from somewhere on the banks of the River Plate in the 19th Century and soon spread all over the world. You can’t go far in Buenos Aires without stumbling across a tango show but for a high concentration of tango dancers and memorabilia try La Boca district, San Telmo (the oldest neighbourhood) or the tourist hot spot Florida Street. Most Tango shows charge an entry fee, but some restaurants employ dancers to entertain you as you eat.

5. Visit Recoleta Cemetery

Photo

A huge number of Argentina’s rich, famous and aristocratic citizens, including Eva Perón (Evita), are buried in Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires. But don’t for a second think this is anything like any cemetery you have ever been to before. Recoleta is more like a neo-classical neighbourhood of the dead, laid out in blocks like an ancient city. Expect elaborate marble mausoleums, decorated with statues and brass and bronze plaques. It is quite something.

6. Take a boat ride to Colonia del Sacramento

Photo

Situated, as it is, on the south bank of the River Plate, Buenos Aires is not far at all from Colonia del Sacramento, the oldest town in Uruguay and another example of Europe’s colonial legacy in South America. Hop on a ferry from BA’s Puerto Madero and you’re there in an hour or so. Visiting Colonia’s historic walled quarter is like stepping back 70 years in time. Classic 1940s Cadillacs sit at the side of the cobbled roads, outside whitewashed houses which have been turned into excellent restaurants, cafes and craft shops. It also boasts a beautiful beach and a great 19th Century lighthouse.

7. Eat Guerrin pizza

Photo

The food in Argentina is, like much of the rest of the place, quite European – think hot dogs, burgers, steak. A treat they do particularly well is pizza (though, of course, pizza is an American invention). One of the finest places to get a slice in Buenos Aires is Pizzeria Güerrin on Avenida Corrientes. It’s a favourite with the locals, many of whom pack the place out by standing to avoid paying for a seat. Slices of delicious pizza are around 50p and a whole pizza just a few pounds.

8. Visit Plaza de Mayo

Photo

There are many grand squares in Buenos Aires, but perhaps the most famous is Plaza de Mayo, named after the revolution of May 1810 that led to independence in 1816. It is also the scene of many of Eva Perón’s famous speeches. Surrounding the square there are a number of landmarks famous in their own right, including the Casa Rosada (the office of the President and the seat of government) and the impressive Metropolitan Cathedral (in photo above).

9. Dance the night away

Photo

They know how to party in Buenos Aires. It is one of the coolest cities in South America, with innumerable bars and clubs staying open until the small hours of the morning. In fact, most bars don’t open until about midnight, and clubs until 2am. Then, after several hours of dancing and singing, party goers stumble out into the morning light and head off to cafes for breakfast.

10. See the Obelisco

Photo

Avenida 9 de Julio is a huge road cutting right through the heart of Buenos Aires, at the centre of which stands el Obelisco, an impressive 70-metre monument which stands at the site where the Argentine flag was first raised in Buenos Aires. It is a popular spot for sports fans to celebrate victories, particularly those of the national football team, La Albiceleste.

More ethical than zoos, animal sanctuaries offer a chance for visitors to see animals enjoying a more peaceful life than they had previously in more natural and comfortable surroundings. They also make a great stop on a backpackers or travellers journey and some rescue centres have even been founded by former travellers. Here are ten inspirational not-for-profit animal sanctuaries that promise an educational, interesting and uplifting visit. Many of the centres also actively seek volunteers, which might be an option for those looking for a more rewarding travel experience.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Brisbane, Australia

Photo

Founded in 1927, the Lone Pine sanctuary in Brisbane is the world’s oldest and largest rescue centre for Koalas and is one of the very few places where you can actually hold koalas for a fee. A beautiful natural woodland reserve, the popular sanctuary is also home to variety of other animals including kangaroos, native Australian birds and platypus. You’ll also probably be very surprised to see how fast the koalas move when the gum tree leaves are brought out at lunchtime.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

Chengdu Moonbear Rescue Centre, China

English ex-pat Jill Robinson MBE founded the Animals Asia Foundation when she discovered that thousands of Asiatic black bears were being raised in appalling conditions on Chinese bear bile farms (the bile is sold for use in traditional Chinese medicines). After years of tireless campaigning the rescue centre was established in 2000 following an unprecedented agreement with the Chinese authorities to release 500 farmed bears. The sanctuary is open to the public and visitors travel for miles to see the bears experience freedom after spending decades in tiny crush cages.

Animals Asia Foundation

Sepilok orangutan sanctuary, Borneo

Photo

Only a few travellers leave Borneo without visiting the world famous Sepolik Rehabilitation Centre and when seeing photos of the impossibly cute residents it’s easy to see why. The sanctuary was founded in 1964 to rehabilitate orphaned orangutans which were mainly victims of the illegal pet trade and logging industry. The large virgin rainforest reserve is home to around 60 to 80 orangutans and they are trained to survive in the wild again and released as soon as they are ready. Visitors are welcomed to the centre but handling of the animals is strictly forbidden. A good tip is to time your visit around feeding time.

Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary (BLES), Thailand

BLES in Sukhothai, Northern Thailand was founded by English animal lover Katherine Connor after she travelled across Asia. Whilst volunteering at a Thai elephant hospital she formed a very strong bond with a premature baby elephant. Instead of finishing her travels she decided to stay in Thailand to rescue her new friend from being sold to a notorious animal tourist show. After the elephant sadly passed away Katherine sold her possessions in England and with the help of her now husband (a Thai elephant handler) set up Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary in his memory. All the elephants at Boon Lott have been rescued from abuse or mistreatment and visitors enjoy a chance to interact with the elephants in a peaceful and secluded location. Staying guests are asked to be involved in all aspects of sanctuary life ranging from collecting food from the jungle to repairing pens.

Noah’s Ark, Georgia, USA

Noah’s Ark is a unique facility located in the US state of Georgia. It provides a home for abused, unwanted and orphaned children as well as animals. The centre is run entirely on donations and is open to the public. Guests come to visit the children and see the collection of over a thousand animals ranging from the very large and exotic to the very small and domesticated. Three of their furry resident’s have also made worldwide news. Baloo the bear, Leo the lion and Shere Khan the tiger have formed an unlikely and unusually strong bond after being rescued in a drug’s raid when they were just 2 months old. The predators (who would be enemies if they were ever to meet in the wild) are housed together and curious visitors travel from all over the US to see their affectionate friendship first hand.

Animal Kingdom, Philippines

Photo

The Animal Kingdom Foundation has a centre based in the Philippines which rescues dogs from the meat trade and a particularly gruesome fate. The charity was formed after a month long surveillance by animal advocates Greg S. Quimpo and Veterinarian Samaniego and they now work to fight against the illegal meat trade after realising thousands of dogs in the Philippines get caught up in it every day. They set up a no-profit, no-kill dog shelter dedicated to saving abandoned, neglected, abused and slaughter-bound dogs. They welcome animal loving visitors and the dogs are also available for adoption to good homes.

Animal Kingdom Foundation

The Donkey Sanctuary, Devon, UK

The Sidmouth donkey sanctuary is an English national treasure and a popular family day out. It was founded by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen MBE when her donkey enthusiasm turned into a full blown rescue centre when she saw some ill treated donkeys at a market in nearby Exeter. Slade House Farm was purchased to house her fast growing family of four legged friends and since then 12,500 donkeys have passed through the sanctuary’s doors. Admission is free and many people come to see the previously neglected or abused donkey’s living happily in the picturesque Devonshire countryside.

The Vervet Monkey Foundation, South Africa

Photo

The Vervet Monkey Foundation in Tzaneen, South Africa is home to nearly 700 orphaned, injured, ex-laboratory or unwanted pet monkeys. The sanctuary (established in 1993) is a 23-hectare rescue, educational and rehabilitation centre as well as being a popular tourist attraction. Volunteers are welcomed from all over the world and accommodation and plenty of Vervet monkey interaction is offered in return for help with everyday activities.

Vervet Monkey Foundation

Agra Bear Rescue Facility, North India

Two major animal charities helped fund a sanctuary for ex dancing bears in Agra, North India which is located just a few kilometres north of the famous Taj Mahal. The initiative was such a success that by the end of 2009 many of the dancing bears forced to dance on the streets of India for entertainment had been rescued. After their harsh and often brutal treatment the bears recover in large enclosures complete with freshwater bathing pools, climbing frames and other tools of environmental enrichment. Visitors are welcomed by appointment and guests speak of the enjoyment of seeing the naturally playful bears in their new comfortable surroundings.

The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, Utah, USA

Photo

The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is located in 33,000 acres of exceptionally beautiful Utah landscape. One of America’s best known animal welfare groups, it was founded in the late 1980’s as an alternative to the ‘kill’ shelters in the US. The sanctuary now houses 1,700 displaced, homeless or unwanted domestic animals ranging from dogs to pot-bellied pigs. Best Friends is also very popular with visitors and volunteers who appreciate the combination of great scenery with the interaction of it’s often adorable residents.

With special thanks to all the sanctuaries for their help with this article.

Carly Henderson is a UK professional travel photographer and perpetual nomad clocking up visits to over 30 different countries including places that few westerners have ventured (such as Libya and Senegal). Here Carly talks to us about her travels, adventures and inspirations:

You have been to 32 countries so far, out of all of them what are your top five favourites and why?

I loved Syria because of the incredible buildings and architecture like the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. Culturally it’s a very interesting country with ancient streets, intriguing souks (markets) and very good food. It is also cheap, the people are very friendly and contrary to popular belief I never felt unsafe walking around day or night.

Kenya because it has so much energy, colour and amazing wildlife, although the country is also a real eye-opener to poverty.

Jordan because of the magnificent sacred sites – Petra, Mount Nebo and Wadi Rum. Swimming in the Dead Sea lived up to it’s hype and there are also many other great areas for snorkelling and diving. The food is good and the people are very welcoming.

Turkey mainly for its historic buildings, my personal favourites were the Aya Sofya, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace. Turkey’s coastline and beaches are also vastly underrated. It’s very easy to meet people here and to pass the time either by joining the busy social life in the many bars, clubs and café’s, relaxing on a cushion smoking Shisha/Nargila or by walking in one of the peaceful parks.

Libya was also great because to me it seemed like a perfect mix of the old and modern. It’s another very friendly country and surprisingly people leave you to browse without any hassle. I loved experiencing life in a city where Gaddafi’s face is around every corner but also visiting the Roman remains, the Berber Villages and the sand dunes at sunset where the whole of the Sahara Desert seems to glow.

Could you share your top three travelling tips?

Always carry small change in your pocket so you don’t have to pull out big notes in the street.

Try to avoid election dates in certain countries. In some countries these events can be unpredictable so do your research before you go.

Respect the culture, traditions and dress code of the country you are visiting and you will get respect back.

Which has been the hardest place you have travelled to and why?

Albania was challenging! Apart from the language barrier (hardly anyone speaks English) you also have to contend with the difference in body language. Albanians say ‘no’ by nodding their head and do a kind of wobble from side to side to say ‘yes’ (which is similar to India). I also really struggled with the food, there are not many vegetables on offer and mountain partridge wasn’t really doing it for me. Oh and dodging the open man-holes got a bit tricky, especially at night!

Which country was the most inspiring in terms of travel photography?

I would say for me it was Cambodia and Vietnam for the diverse landscape, architecture and the people. I also found these places very special because you still have the opportunity to photograph traditional ways of life, which is quickly disappearing in so many other countries.

Have you ever had any trouble taking photos in a particular country?

In most countries I didn’t experience any problems as long as I was careful not to photograph government buildings or stick my lens in people’s faces. Although one country I did have problems in was the Casamance region of Senegal. I found it very hard to photograph anything without cautious eyes watching my every move and there was a real feeling of distrust in this area. Anybody who did see me take a photo shot me a look of disapproval and a quick wave of their finger. Casamance was one of the few places I visited that I didn’t feel at all comfortable with a camera.

What advice could you offer people looking to get into travel photography?

Always greet people before just snapping away and it’s even better to greet them in their own language. Don’t be afraid to ask people if it’s okay to photograph them, most people will respond positively, especially children. Sometimes you will be asked for money or cigarettes in exchange for a photograph and this is one of the reasons why you should ask before taking a person’s photo and of course you should also ask out of courtesy.

Make sure you always carry spare batteries and memory/film, it’s a horrible feeling when you have the perfect picture in your mind’s eye and no way of capturing it. My last piece of advice is to always take up offers and opportunities, it’s all great experience and they might even lead you to capturing ‘the moment’ you’ve been hoping for.

Have you been in any very dangerous situations whilst travelling and could they have been avoided?

I’ve been in a fair few hazardous situations but most of the potentially dangerous situations I’ve been in involved badly maintained vehicles or slightly erratic drivers! In Beirut the mini bus we were riding in was making a loud clanking noise as we headed around the cliff-side. After what seemed like ages the driver finally stopped as he realised the wheel was coming off!

Driving in Tripoli in Libya is one experience I don’t want to have again! In the daytime driving is fine but when night falls all you can do is pray you reach your destination in one piece. Inside our car it was eerily quiet as we weaved in and out of fast moving vehicles with most of them not having any lights on at all. In Tripoli there are no properly defined roads or street lights and when we were visiting a lot of men dressed all in black had a habit of running randomly across the highway!

Many people are put off by travelling to the Middle East because of the current situation there, have you ever felt threatened in a country in the Middle East?

Before I went to the Middle East I wouldn’t have believed someone if they told me you will feel very safe and welcomed, but this was exactly my experience. When I travelled there I was overwhelmed by the generosity and the honesty of the people I met in the Middle Eastern countries.

I personally think the media and politicians have exaggerated the belief that the Middle East in a very unsafe place to travel. Of course there are certain areas you will want to avoid because of political or religious conflicts but the average person in the Middle East is not the fanatic or terrorist you see on TV, far from it. When travelling in the Middle East I personally never felt a target because of where I come from and some of the Middle East countries are my all time favourite travel destinations.

As a woman traveller I felt very safe but when there you may find you get a few stares but this is because you look different to them and are considered exotic. Generally you will find most men in the Middle East respectful to you especially if you show respect for yourself and their culture and dress accordingly.

Finally if you could settle anywhere in any country where would it be?

I haven’t found a place yet that I would want to live in full time although I was tempted in Turkey and Jordan, I have very fond memories of my time spent living with a Bedouin family in Jordan where I felt very happy and comfortable. Although I’ve always thought when I’m very, very old (and all travelled out) I would appreciate the quality of life that Canada offers. At the moment I still think the nomadic way of life is the most appealing so I think I’ll just keep exploring and see where life leads me..

Canada is the second largest country in the world and a perfect travel destination if you’re a fan of the great outdoors. A land of vast wilderness, rocky peaks, stretches of endless forests and crystal clear lakes and falls, it’s a place many say is impossible not to like. Its freshwater resources in particular are the envy of the world and if you visit you would be foolish not to add a few to your must see list. As a nature lover and a Canadian native, here is my choice for five of the best water destinations in my country:

The Reversing Falls, NB

Photo

This watery phenomenon in the Bay of Fundy would be more aptly named the Reversing Rapids, but it makes for noteworthy spectacle just the same. The narrow Gorge of the St. John’s river, combined with the massive rise and fall of tides, creates this patch of rapids which is only calm for 20 minutes a day as the tides change. But if you really want the full experience, hop on a Jet Boat tour and get soaked riding over the falls.

Iceberg Alley, NL

Photo

Remember that scene in Titanic where the boat was approaching that massive iceberg? Ever wonder what it would be like to see something that massive and imposing floating along side you? Well, you can experience exactly that on a trip through iceberg alley off the Coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. As icebergs break off of Greenland they drift downward past the island of NL creating an awe inspiring water destination. Boat trip riders get to see and photograph these floating ice mountains along with a ton of other sea wildlife.

Niagara Falls, ON

Photo

So if you take the trip to Niagara Falls make sure you also bring your passport. It’s totally worth a hop over the border to see the outstanding view from the Canadian side. The falls themselves are actually separated into to distinct sections, the American Falls and the Horseshoe falls which are almost entirely on the Canadian side. The Horseshoe Falls, are double the size of their little brother and have an additional 70 or so foot drop. Also on the Canadian side are the Whirlpool Aero Car and the Journey Behind the Falls, which take you over and behind the falls respectively. Make sure to see the falls during the day and at night, because with the lights on it’s a totally different experience.

Magpie River, QB

Photo

A real white water adventure begins with being airlifted into the river and that’s exactly what happens in the Magpie when you take on this top-rated rafting destination. The class III-V rapids are a guaranteed shot of adrenaline, while the breathtaking scenery is a dose of serenity. Don’t get too relaxed though, as somewhere during your five day expedition, your air lift will be back to carry you safely over the 80-foot drop of the Magpie River Falls.

Johnstone Strait, BC

Photo

If you are totally over traditional whale watches, head to British Columbia, grab a kayak and get ready for something a little more up close and personal. The serene waters between the province of BC and the Island of Vancouver are a frequent summer home for Killer Whales. The migration makes this little stretch of water the best place in the world to observe Orcas in their natural environment. For whale watching with an adventure twist there’s nothing better than this.

So if visiting this beautiful country be sure to add a few of these places to your list.

Leslie West is a frequent traveler, a Canada aficionado and a writer for a Canadian Pardons site.

Tokyo is one of the most exciting destinations to visit in the world and well deserving of it’s hyperactive, adrenaline fuelled and non-stop reputation. It’s is a place where innovation and new ideas are actively encouraged and if you’re lucky enough to get the chance to visit you’ll realise it’s super friendly people also have a very unique outlook on life. Trends and originality are fully embraced in this modern metropolis and we personally believe this is one of the reasons why this city is so special. Here are our ten reasons why we think Tokyo is the coolest city in the world:-

Hayao Miyazaki & Studio Ghibli

Photo

Hayao Miyazaki is the Godfather of Japanese animated feature films and a national treasure; he is Japan’s answer to Walt Disney. Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibi in 1985, the animation studio responsible for mega-bucks grossing films such as Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle. Tokyo is home to the engaging Studio Ghibli Museum – a meticulously thought out interactive visitor’s attraction. The museum (which is unsurprisingly a mecca for anime fans) is designed by Miyazaki himself and has the motto ‘Let’s get lost together.’

Robots

Photo

Most people know that the Japanese are obsessed with futuristic technology, especially robots. You would probably expect nothing less from the country that created ASIMO – a freakishly realistic humanoid robot that can run, walk, climb the stairs and bring you your tea. Now the Japanese are developing robots to look even more human like and the newer versions have the ability to express emotions and even smile and blink. One of the latest robots is an attractive female humanoid that is programmed to walk down a catwalk. There are also robots in Japan that can take the place of pets, help the elderly and even become a lonely child’s best friend.

Karaoke Bars

Photo

If your only experience of karaoke is a ropey microphone and TV set up in a dodgy back room bar then you really must give karaoke in Tokyo a try. Karaoke is a billion dollar industry in Japan and the bars are often an impressive 10 stories high and packed with hundreds of futuristic pod-like rooms. Book a room and sing your heart out accompanied by a sound-activated laser show and then order food and drink using the high-tech touch screen remote control. An experience not to missed (even if it is to hear a hundred Japanese men murder a Bonnie Tyler song…)

The people

Photo

Japan is famous for it’s harmony-loving culture and the Asian country is often thought to have one of the most polite societies in the world. Customs and social etiquette are very important here and the extreme politeness of the people will probably leave quite an impression on you. In Tokyo it’s not uncommon to see stooping station masters greeting you at the underground entrance or shopkeepers continuously bowing you out of a shop after making a purchase.

Cosplay

Cosplay

Getting dressed up as your favourite manga or anime character is the thing to do in Tokyo and ‘Cosplay‘ (a type of performance art trend) is now catching on in many other countries around the world. If you happen to be taking a stroll around Harajuku in your normal casual weekend attire you might feel more than a little under-dressed amid all the gothic rock stars, lolitas, french maids and shiny video game characters.

Love hotels

Photo

Love hotels cater to just about everyone and anyone who feels the need for a pay by the hour (or a night) hotel. Rooms are quirkily themed and decked out to look like anything ranging from a subway train carriage to a prison cell. Other rooms are cuter and more light-hearted and in open-minded Tokyo not all Love Hotels have a seedy reputation. Most provide ‘equipment’ such as toys, karaoke machines, game consoles and more unusual stuff. Great for trying out – even if it’s just to have a funny story to tell when you get back home…

The trains

Photo

The Japanese take their trains and their train network systems very seriously. The trains and railways in Tokyo are second to none for cleanliness, efficiency and time keeping – you could literally set your watch by them. Okay so they might be crowded, but in off-peak times the trains are a joy to travel on and will probably leave you wondering why your own public transport system is so rubbish in comparison. The iconic Bullet train which travels at speeds of up to 300 km/h is an essential ride and the journey from Kyoto to Tokyo is especially recommended for the incredible views of Mount Fuji.

Kawaii

Photo

In Tokyo you can’t walk more than a couple of steps without passing a ultra cute Hello Kitty toy, Totoro, Gloomy bear or miniature plastic sushi. The Japanese are infatuated with Kawaii (which literally means cute, loveable and adorable) and Tokyo’s fondness for all thing cute just adds to it’s coolness.

Maid cafes

Photo

Okay they might not be for everyone but Tokyo’s maid cafes are a thriving industry. Here customers can grab a coffee and cake and be served by waitresses dressed in maid costumes. The ‘maids’ act as servants and treat customers as masters (and mistresses) just like they would in a private home. Increased competition in the cafes means that many of them are trying to outdo each other in the crazy stakes – which probably means even more interesting cafe experiences in the future. Female travellers might want to try one of the butler cafes…

The lights

Photo

When night falls in Tokyo the city really comes to life – gigantic neon signs and advertising hoardings adorn every available space on Tokyo’s multi-storey buildings. For total neon immersion head to the wealthy shopping area Ginza, crowded Shinjuku or Akihabara (otherwise known as ‘Electric City’). Recreate a scene from Blade Runner by picking up barbecued skewered chicken on a trip to Shinjuku’s Memory Lane (Omoide Yokocho).

Bangkok should be a place on everyone’s travel list. It’s a manic city, where hedonism and grittiness are balanced by traditional beauty, pockets of spiritual sereneness and smiling faces. Mostly popular with backpackers and curious tourist it’s a city which requires it to be experienced rather than than seen. Many travellers opt for budget hotels but like in many Asian countries, Bangkok’s top-end luxury hotels are exceptional. Here are four Bangkok hotels ranging from the traditional to the ultra modern which we think you’ll won’t regret blowing the budget on:-

Le Meridien Bangkok

A sleek and towering oasis of calm in one of Bangkok’s liveliest areas it’s no surprise this hotel tops many prestigious hotel hot lists. The much lauded décor is ultra contemporary and the designers have made liberal use of glass, marble and wood. All rooms come equipped with state-of-the-art amenities including an ergonomic work chair, touch-screen IP phone, rain shower and for those that fancy a more interesting slumber there is even an option to stay in a room with a circular bed.

The dining is equally as impressive and the Le Meridien culinary experience consists of top chefs creating dishes live to order and wandering waiters presenting signature dish samples to the lucky guests. Good job the hotel has a pretty cool gym too. Prices range from ($109-$205)

Peninsula Bangkok

Another one of Bangkok’s sky-rise beauties the Peninsula, located on the banks of the Chao Phraya, is an award winning five star hotel strategically designed to ensure every room has a panoramic river view. Those with even deeper pockets might want to book a room with a personal outdoor jacuzzi…

The choices of dining range from riverside alfresco to world class fine dining and other impressive facilities include a three tiered swimming pool and modern gym. Need a little pampering? The largest spa in Bangkok will surely oblige.
With 130 years of catering for distinguished guests it’s no wonder the legendary Mandarin Oriental is getting it so right. Within the restored 19th century and more modern walls, historical colonial inspired luxury awaits and it’s easy to see why this five hotel has had a long list of celebrity guests including mega A-listers such as Elizabeth Taylor and the late Audrey Hepburn.

Dublin used to be Stag Night heaven that is until the Gardá (otherwise known as the Irish police) and many pub owners got properly fed up with the male orientated parties causing a lot of trouble. Their solution was to ban Stag groups from the most popular drinking area, Temple Bar. Ladies however, are still very welcome to come for Hen Nights as this tends to attract local lads who are then willing to part with their hard earned cash. Most people would associate Dublin and Ireland with drinking and whilst I admit the ‘pub’ is a large part of life, there’s still plenty to do for visitors.

Visitors only usually come to Dublin for a short time and pack in a lot in a few days. If you are visiting Dublin for a only a short while, these are my suggestions for things to do, places to eat and where to enjoy a few drinks along the way…

Early Morning Start

Irish breakfasts are very similar to English breakfasts (sausage, bacon, fried egg, etc.) the only difference is that include white pudding. Strangely this simple added ingredient adds a whole new dimension to your breakfast and I think it’s definitely worth trying. A great place have your large Irish breakfast is The Bad Ass Cafe which is located in the centre of Temple Bar.

Photo

Once your breakfast has settled cross over the river and jump on the Luas (Dublin’s city tram), get off at the Suir Road stop (Heuston station direction) here you can visit Kilmainham Gaol. Guided tours around the 18th century gaol will cost you €6; it’s a very informative tour where you will learn all about the history and it’s occupants. As you can imagine it isn’t very pro-Britain so if you’re English be prepared for a bit of Brit bashing!

Photo

By the end of the tour you’re likely to be ready for a pint, what better time to head to the Guinness Storehouse in South Dublin, you can walk but I would suggest jumping in a taxi. The Guinness Storehouse will take about two hours to walk around and unsurprisingly it’s Dublin’s most visited tourist attraction. If you decide to visit you’ll get a free pint at the end of the tour in the Gravity Bar which overlooks the city – an impressive view on a clear day. The entrance fee is a little steep, it costs €15.00 but you can get a 10% discount if you book online. It’s not just about getting a “free pint” you will learn about Guinness’s history, the ingredients used, visit the tasting laboratory and then go to my favourite part – the Guinness advertising where you can see all their adverts spanning several decades.

Late Lunch the Irish Way

Next stop is Temple Bar, I would highly recommend a trip to the Elephant and Castle, if you do go there you are going to have to order the chicken wings. If you ask any Dubliner about the Elephant and Castle, they’ll grin and say “chicken wings”. The burgers are also very good, as are the desserts and there’s a nice selection of wines. If you are after something lighter do as the Irish do and get a soup and a sandwich from one of the many pubs. If you are looking for a cheaper option then head across the Ha’penny Bridge to the Epicurean Food Hall where you can find food from all around the world – I would recommend La Corte Coffee Shop for an excellent salami calzone.

Afternoon shenanigans

After a busy morning my suggested itinerary will now let you wind down a bit. I would recommend taking a stroll around Trinity College, if you are interested in beautiful manuscripts then for a fee you can see the famous ‘Book of Kells.’ At the bottom of Grafton Street say hello to Molly Malone (aka the Tart with the Cart!) before taking a walk up Grafton Street. If it is a nice day also have a walk around the beautiful Iveagh Gardens which were originally designed back in 1865 by Ninian Niven.

Photo

Once you’ve seen some sights, enjoyed the gardens and looked around some shops you cannot possibly consider leaving Dublin without trying a pint or two in one of the pubs. Every pub I’ve visited in Dublin (although admittedly I haven’t been to them all) serves a good pint of Guinness. To be honest I couldn’t see a pub lasting too long here if it served bad pints of the black stuff..

Dinner and a lively evening

Most will now want to eat dinner before the evening activities start. Parallel to Grafton Street is Dawson Street where you will find loads of great bars and some very good restaurants. Two places that I would recommend are Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse and Grill and Fire, if your pockets are quite deep and you fancy having the best steak in town then head to Shanahans on the Green.

Photo

After dinner head to the bars Dawson Street where you will find many of the locals drinking. Alternatively you visit the main tourist hub Temple Bar. If you want one more activity before your night of drinking then why not go greyhound racing. The Irish love to gamble and I personally think dog racing is a great night out – you will even see children as young as ten going up to gamble! There are two race tracks, one is Shelbourne Park (open Saturdays) and the other is Harolds Cross (open Fridays). You can bet as much or a little as you want, enjoy a few drinks and hopefully have a good time. After the races, head back into town to spend your winnings, alternatively (if you’re like me) drown your sorrows.

Photo

Dublin is definitely worth a visit – it’s a fun and lively city as well as being beautiful, atmospheric and romantic. As you can probably imagine there are plenty more things to do in Dublin, these are just a few suggestions. If possible I would suggest staying a bit longer than a weekend and travel a bit further afield to Ireland’s other great cities of Cork, Galway, Kerry and a personal favourite of mine-Kilkenny. Be sure to come and visit and and stay lucky…

For years, Melbourne in Victoria, Australia has claimed to be the best sporting nation and many locals already knew that no other city in the world puts on major sporting events quite like Melbourne. Well now it’s confirmed as true. In a recent SportBusiness industry analysis of global sporting cities, the state capital of Victoria went on to win the title of “Ultimate Sports City” for the third time in a row. Melbourne won the prestigious award ahead of other competing cities including Berlin-who hosted the IAAF Athletics World Championships and Singapore who hosted the first night Formula One Grand Prix.

Photo

If you are a major sports fan then Melbourne is definitely the place to visit. The city offers a year round calendar of major events, excellent facilities, great weather (normally!), strong event attendances and an amazing sporting atmosphere with crowds that have a genuine passion for sport.

Why do Australians love sport so much?

Photo

Sport is sometimes jokingly called “Australia’s national religion” and the devotion to organised activities is probably down to the fabulous weather and the clean air which provides ideal conditions to participate in and watch sports. There is a culture of looking after your health in Australia and sports and activities are often ingrained in everyday life. The Australian government is also very supportive. Each state in Australia has agencies responsible for sport and recreation policy and every area operates their own institutes and academies of sport.

What sports can I expect to see in Melbourne and Australia?

Photo

Throughout Australia there is a very wide variety of sports to chose from Taekwondo to Iron Man events and everything inbetween. The most popular sports in terms of attendance (according to 2006/7 government statistics) are Australian rules football, horse racing, rugby league, motorsport, cricket, rugby union and soccer. Other popular sports are of course surfing and kite surfing, but also swimming, roller skating, cycling, golf and softball.

Any other reasons to visit Melbourne?

Photo

Melbourne is lively and cosmopolitan city set around the shores of Port Phillip Bay with the city itself sitting on the northern banks of the Yarra River. Melbourne prides itself on it’s friendliness and welcomes its visitors with character, personality and enthusiasm.

There are some great neighbourhoods (Fitzroy, St Kilda and Carlton) which have strong art, music, cuisine and design scenes and several other areas such as the century-old Queen Victoria Market which are great for shopping. Melbourne also has some interesting museums, tranquil landscaped gardens, some great offbeat festivals and of course the incredible Great Ocean Road is not too far away. For accommodation and more visitor information the Visit Melbourne site is very useful.

A grand metropolis and one of the world’s greatest cities, London is an exciting mix of different cultures and strong music, art and design scenes. Sometimes gritty, always historically proud with many pockets of true originality and quintessentially English eccentricity, the city doesn’t tend to disappoint it’s many visitors. We have chosen ten hotels (in no particular order) that reflect London’s taste for the original, the ultra cool, slightly extraordinary and the impeccably designed.

1. Hotel 41

Aptly located on Buckingham Palace Road Hotel 41 frequently tops prestigious hotel critic lists. Often cited as having a ‘private member’s club’ feel, this luxurious five star hotel mixes traditional English opulence and elegant nostalgia with cutting edge technology, yet still manages to retain an intriguing edge. All 41 rooms are individually designed but all feature rich fabrics, marble bathrooms and the hotel’s monochrome and mahogany signature design. Services include a 24 hour honesty pantry, a personal butler and a cellar of fine wine. Average price per night £342

2. The Soho Hotel

Part of the exclusive Firmdale chain this frequently praised luxury hotel centred in the city’s entertainment and creative district has quickly become a London institution. Immaculately designed by celebrated interior designer Kit Kemp in her signature contemporary English style, the hotel attracts A-list celebrities and the cream of London’s glitterati. Each individually designed spacious room feature strong textiles, solid granite and oak bathrooms, flat screens TVs and DVD/CD players. The hotel also has two state-of-the-art private ’screening rooms,’ a gym, beauty treatment rooms and an honesty bar. Average price per night £370

3. The Hoxton Hotel

The Hoxton Hotel epitomises the trendy urban cool of Hoxton itself but with surprisingly competitive prices. Innovatively designed with open fireplaces, classic leather furniture, exposed brickwork and the occasional faux moose head, the style is often likened to a modern urban country lodge. The guest rooms, although compact, are equally as stylish with Frette linen, flatscreen TVs, rain power showers and some cool artistic details. Other extras include a free Pret a Manger Breakfast (delivered to your door), fresh milk and water in the fridge and free WiFi. Also watch out for their extremely popular £1 a room sale. Normal Average price per night £114

4. Church Street Hotel

Church Street Hotel located in a Zone 2 South London neighbourhood, prides itself on it’s unique and welcoming atmosphere, colourful Cuban/Mexican inspired room designs, attention to detail and it’s good value prices. The new owners transformed a run down bed and breakfast into positively received boutique hotel adorned with striking Mexican tiles, painted furniture and Spanish-American religious art. Personal touches include a cigar box containing Green and Black’s chocolate, a complimentary jar of hot sauce and lovingly made organic breakfasts. A slice of Havana heaven in Camberwell. Average price per night £106

5. 40 Winks

With only two bedrooms 40 winks is likely to be one of the smallest boutique hotels you can find. In fact the hotel is actually the four storey Queen Anne townhouse home of acclaimed interior designer David Carter, and it’s eclectic and meticulously designed rooms are the antithesis of a bland large hotel environment. Decadent and eccentrically English but with a fashionably shabby chic twist (and details like a lion’s head tap in the bath and a music room complete with a Beatles drumkit) it’s no surprise the hotel is also one of London’s most successful celebrity and fashion shoot locations. It also attracts a host of artists and A-listers. Quirky events such as a vintage afternoon tea party and glamorous pyjama parties are a regular occurrence. Single Room £90 Double Room £130 Events from £25

For 40 Winks Bookings

6. Andaz

Housed in a red brick Victorian building in Liverpool Street, the Andaz is a sleek modern new hotel where design and faultless personal customer service are the priority. When you arrive the receptionist greets you at the door and checks you in with a laptop and services such as wifi, local phone calls and healthy organic mini bar are all included in the room price. The rooms are spacious and stylish with minimalist bold colours, flat screen TVs, iPod docks and a fast-fill deep eco-friendly bath. Average price per night £284

7. Rough Luxe

Rough Luxe is definitely not your average boutique hotel. The design is the brainchild of architect and interior designer Rabih Hage and the result is a unique combination of urban shabby chic and classic English luxury. Peeling walls, bare floorboards and unfinished surfaces are contrasted with top quality furniture and an impressive collection of modern art. In some of the nine rooms you may have to share a bathroom, but all the rooms have expensive bed linen, designer comforts and an unconventional individual design. Staying here would be an experience in itself. Double Rooms from £150 per night

8. The Zetter

Located in the heart of London’s trendy creative neighbourhood Clerkenwell, this small contemporary boutique hotel caters to a design loving crowd. Once a Victorian warehouse, now The Zetter houses 59 guest rooms individually designed in a bold retro-modern style with quirky and delicate artistic touches. Other unique details include a vending machine on every floor (deposing everything from champagne to disposable cameras) and complimentary spring water from the hotel’s very own 1,500ft bore hole. The Zetter has also been commended on its eco friendly ethos and dedication to providing state of the art technology in every room. Average price per night £198

9. The Boundary

The Boundary is a new joint project between famous interior designer Sir Terence Conran and his wife Vicki and is already winning critical acclaim. Opened in trendy Shoreditch in 2009 the converted Victorian warehouse is now home to 12 individually designed guest rooms. Each room pays homage to a different legendary designer or design movement from Bauhaus to Josef Hoffmann. Conran’s signature style of simple clean lines with a quirky twist follow throughout the hotel and the designers have thought of every detail. These details include heated floors, large flat screen TVs, handmade super King sized Savoir beds and extensive acoustic sound-proofing. The Boundary experience also includes a popular rooftop terrace and several impressive bars and restaurants. Rooms start from £200 but special rates are offered at the weekend.
